Daily Life Talks: Discernment

discernment

I heard someone say that “Discernment is the ability to know the difference between sugar and salt”. Salt and sugar look a lot alike. Upon inspection, though, you realize the stark difference (being the taste). Some people, issues and situations are a lot alike; and it’s not until you’ve gotten involved on a certain level that you realize they are vastly different. By this point there are usually regrets and wishes that you had realized sooner and taken a different approach.

In a dining or cooking situation with actual salt and sugar, an easy way to discern the difference between the two without any labels is to taste a very small amount of both before you put it on your meal or into your pot. This will keep you from ruining your meal. In life, one way to avoid misapplying strategies to dealing with people and situations is to step back and feel them out bit by bit. Just because it feels like déjà vu, doesn’t mean it’s the same exact thing. Pay attention to clues that give you insight as to how to handle what’s in front of you.
