Have you ever heard the saying “An overnight success takes 10 years”? I think there’s truth to it. It may not literally take someone 10 years, but people who seem like overnight successes have likely been at their craft for a long time before they see any successes or the fruits of their labor.
True success takes time. True success is a long game affair. I’m not a chess player, but I do know there’s a huge difference between checkers and chess. I’ve heard that some chess games go on for days or longer! That speaks to the complexity of rules, nuances and strategies of the game. Individual wins are checkers. True, long term success is chess.
I don’t believe you need to play chess to fully understand this. I do think you have to learn how to think about the long game and how to maneuver accordingly – no matter how long it takes you to get there. The foundation of this is always thinking of your end goal and ensuring that everything you do or say (no matter how small) is in support of that. Will there be times you fall short? Absolutely. But even in this, what matters is how you continue to keep your end goal in mind, and then continue to do what is required to achieve it.
