Fall Sewing Projects for Beginners

Welcome to the Wear What You Make sewing blog. Wear What You Make is a sewing community designed to help beginner sewists learn how to make clothes that they love. And now…we may as well say that Fall is here! And for many of us that means finding (and making) clothes we can layer and that can keep us warm. If you are a beginner sewist with some experience under your belt, here are some sewing projects for beginners you can start now that will be ready by the time Fall is in full swing. If you are a true beginner, don’t worry…we’ll have something for you in a future talk soon! For now, let’s check out some great sewing projects for our confident beginners.

1. Coordinates and sweater dresses: Coordinates are a really great way to step out in style. Lighter and medium weight fabrics will allow you to layer and create looks that are a little more versatile than heavier weight fabrics. Sweater dresses with medium weight fabrics are great with stockings or tights. Just keep in mind that they aren’t exactly layering material, so you want to reserve them for cooler temperatures. I haven’t personally made anything from this sewing pattern package, but I think it is a great choice. It has 3 distinct looks, with items you can wear with other pieces in your wardrobe.

2. Sweatshirts and Tunics: I love a good sweatshirt, but my philosophy is that it can’t just be ANY regular sweatshirt. You have to make it with some embellishments or really cool fabric patterns! I love this particular sweatshirt because it has 5 different variations in 1 sewing pattern package, with several of them having some really fun embellishments that add style to the everyday sweatshirt. This pattern also has a tunic variation. Tunics are great to wear with leggings, jeggings or lightweight skinny jeans and are perfect for early Fall in colder locations or in locations where Fall and Winter are milder and don’t require as much clothing.

3. Short capes: Medium-weight short capes are an easy way to brave the dropping temperatures and to add style and effective layers to your clothes. I personally made this one for this past Winter with a heavy-weight fabric and am thinking about making a lighter-weight version for the more moderate parts of Fall and Winter this year.
