How to Save Money While Sewing

It’s a very common misconception that you can save money BY sewing your own clothes. The average sewist does not. You can, however, save money WHILE sewing and I’ll share with you a few ways I do.

1. Use Digital Sewing Patterns: This may not be the best option for everyone or for every project. But digital sewing patterns are often less expensive than their print versions and counterparts. They require more work on your end to prepare them to use, but the cost savings is noteworthy.

2. Use 1 Pattern for Multiple Projects: I like to use 1 pattern for multiple projects across different seasons in the year. I will use heavier fabrics for colder months and lighter fabrics for warmer months.

3. Preserve Your Tools: I make sure that I don’t lose my tools or abuse them. I take proper care of them and organize them so that I don’t have to replace them.

4. Use Tools and Equipment for Where You Are: Unless you are a couturier or making clothes en masse professionally, I don’t recommend buying top of the line or industrial sewing machines. They are expensive and sometimes only perform one function. This is great if you are generating money with your sewing work. But if you are not, cut down costs with a quality domestic machine and keep it maintained.

5. Buy “Practice Fabric” in Bulk: When you are sewing your own clothes, you want to use the best quality fabric you can find at the best price for your budget. In order to get better at making your own clothes, you’ll need to practice. Practicing costs money too, because you need “practice fabric”. I recommend buying this type of fabric in bulk when you find it at clearance or sale price. How much money you save depends on the sale price on the fabric, so use your own personal budget as a guide.
